Cowries of Heinrich Conrad Weinkauff (1817-1886)

This is a selection of cowries recently discovered in a private collection. They originate from the famous Weikauff collection which seemed to have disappeared. The labels, apparently written by Weinkauff himself, bear prices in Reichsmark. We assume that after completing his part of the update of the "Conchylien Cabinett" of Martini and Chemnitz in 1881, he sold all his shells. The MSF is proud of these irreplaceable historical pieces, among which there are numerous specimens illustrated in the "Cabinett", including the holotypes of Talostolida subteres and Lyncina loebbeckeana .
