Etheria cf. elliptica

Giant Freshwater Oyster from the Nyamakuju Rapids, Ruaha River, Tanzania (86-130 mm). These shells were discovered when a drought in 1987 exposed parts of the rocky river bed that are normally inaccessible. Specimens with BOTH valves. Usually, only the top valve can be found, while the other valve is firmly attached to submerged rocks. Extremely rare, probably an undescribed species. Newly added to the collection of the MSF reg. # bv48
